If you’ve been told you might have a spine tumor, or your symptoms might suggest one, it’s normal to feel a little uncertain or anxious. However, a spine tumor assessment at Advanced Neurosurgery can give you clear answers and provide treatment solutions in Reno and Carson City, Nevada.

During a spine tumor assessment, our renowned board-certified neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Song, and our highly trained team use the most advanced diagnostic imaging technology, detailed physical exams, and comprehensive reviews of your medical history to assemble a complete picture of your condition.

We take our time during this assessment to understand exactly what’s going on and how to move forward as we prioritize your health and safety.

Reasons for spine tumor assessments

Our team may recommend a spine tumor evaluation if you’ve experienced:

  • Chronic back or neck pain despite conservative care
  • Weakness or numbness in your extremities
  • Frequent balance or coordination issues
  • Mobility challenges
  • Urinary or fecal incontinence
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Chronic unexplained fatigue

These symptoms don’t always mean you have a tumor, but they can be signs that something else is affecting your spinal cord or surrounding structures. Your assessment allows Dr. Song and our team to positively identify that issue.

Only 20% of spinal tumors are malignant. Although that's a positive statistic, it's important to understand that even benign tumors can pressure the delicate structures in your spine and trigger debilitating symptoms. Fortunately, spinal tumors are treatable, whether it's a conservative or surgical approach.

You also need a spine tumor assessment before scheduling minimally invasive spine surgery.

During your spine tumor assessment

Your assessment includes:

Symptom review

We review your general medical history and spine-specific issues you've experienced in the past. This includes a careful analysis of prior imaging and lab test results.

Neurological exam

During your neurological exam, we check your reflexes, strength, coordination, and sensation in your limbs.

Advanced imaging

Advanced imaging tests, such as MRI or CT scans, allow us to view your spinal cord and surrounding tissues in great detail.

In some cases, spine assessments include additional steps. For example,we may perform a minimally invasive procedure to obtain a tissue sample for lab evaluation (biopsy).

After compiling all the information, we discuss the findings and recommend treatment options.
